And yet the speed gap between the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air with M1 is not that great. There are some reasons to splurge for the MacBook Pro with M1, though. You get better sustained performance for larger tasks, because the MacBook Pro has a fan and the Air does not. And I do appreciate that the MacBook Pro has a brighter display and a better GPU for its opening price. If Apple threw in two more Thunderbolt ports I think the Pro would be an easier sell.

If you’re wondering whether it’s worth to switch from older MacBook Air models to this new M1-powered beast, my answer is go for it and don’t look back, because I didn’t and I’m loving it.

If only it packed a couple more ports and slimmed down its bezels, the new MacBook Air might be 5-star perfect. The Dell XPS 13 has much smaller bezels, but it trails behind the MacBook Air in performance and battery life. You could save $650 with a similarly configured $999 Asus ZenBook 13, and get a few ports too, but you'd be sacrificing performance and around an hour of endurance. For those who live and work in the Apple ecosystem, though, the new MacBook Air is the easiest buying decision you've had in ages.

Apple M1 8-Core GPU: Von Apple selbst designte Grafikkarte im Apple M1 SoC und laut Apple mit acht Kernen (im Einstiegs-MacBook Air sind nur 7 aktiviert). Die 8-Kern-Variante bietet 128 Ausführungseinheiten und eine theoretische Maximalleistung von 2,6 Teraflops. Laut Apple soll die GPU schneller sein als z.b. die iGPU in Tiger Lake.
Diese Klasse ist noch durchaus fähig neueste Spiele flüssig darzustellen, nur nicht mehr mit allen Details und in hohen Auflösungen. Besonders anspruchsvolle Spiele laufen nur in minimalen Detailstufen, wodurch die grafische Qualität oft deutlich leidet. Diese Klasse ist nur noch für Gelegenheitsspieler empfehlenswert. Der Stromverbrauch von modernen Grafikkarten in dieser Klasse ist dafür geringer und erlaubt auch bessere Akkulaufzeiten.

M1: System on a Chip (SoC) von Apple mit 8 Prozessorkernen (4 Performance und 4 Stromsparkerne), einer 7- oder 8-Kern GPU (je nach Modell) und einer 16-Kern Neural-Engine.
