At first glance, it may seem odd that Apple is releasing the upgraded M3 MacBook Air lineup just nine months after the 15-inch M2 version was first unveiled at Apple WWDC in June 2023. But, this is a good thing. For the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models, this is an incremental upgrade that brings them up to date with the new M3 processors that Apple announced last fall and continues them on their trajectory to be more capable and more of the light professional-grade laptops that many people can use to handle all of their work. That keeps mainstream Mac laptops at a more approachable price and allows the MacBook Pro models to fully focus on high-end features that power users and the most demanding professionals need. As I've said before, the M3 lineup looks like it is purpose-built to handle AI workloads.

The MacBook Pro 13-inch M3 impresses thanks to its tasteful ultraportable design, bold display, epic battery life and powerful M3 performance. While MacBook Air M2 owners don't have to upgrade due to the relatively small bump in performance, MacBook Air M1 users should seriously consider buying the new laptop. The same is true for anyone new to the Apple ecosystem seeking the most recent Air model. Even if $1,099 isn't cheap, the new 13-inch MacBook Air is the most affordable Apple laptop packing an M3 chip. For what it offers, it's a magnificent value.

So, in summary, everything that sets the M3 MacBook Air apart from the M2 model equates to about $100 dollars more. That's a slightly faster processor, the ability to connect two external monitors and the dark blue color option – as good as it is, it makes the M2 MacBook Air look more appealing. However, if your business has reached its laptop upgrade cycle – or you're a new business ready to kit out employees with an attractive machine – the M3 MacBook Air is light, snappy, and stylish.

The MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) was announced on Monday, March 4, and by Tuesday I was at Apple's headquarters in London to test out the new laptop. I also received both the 13-inch and 15-inch models to fully review, and have been using the 13-inch model primarily throughout the rest of the week. I used the MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) for various work tasks, including writing some of this review, while also testing out various apps including Adobe Photoshop and Ableton Live 11. I also watched a few movies and TV shows, and played a couple of games as well. I've reviewed almost all of Apple's MacBooks for TechRadar over the past 10 years, as well as hundreds of Windows laptops and Chromebooks, and used this experience, alongside my time with the MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) to draw my conclusions.

The redesign of the MacBook Air was a major revelation. Adding Apple's M3 silicon into that mix gives this laptop even more life. And cutting the effective price generation on generation makes it even more appealing for those seeking a portable 13-inch laptop. There are nitpicks, such as the screen notch not being a perfect solution, intensive tasks causing some heat, but nothing major. It's also important to understand that the M3 in the fanless Air form isn't as powerful as from the step-up MacBook Pro's solution. Overall, I still think the MacBook Air is the best laptop in the world for most people and this 2024 edition with M3 continues to prove that. It's silent, it's powerful, it's long-lasting and it's ultimately hard to fault.

The Apple MacBook Air 13 M3 won’t win any innovation awards, but it still excels in just about every area that matters for an everyday laptop. Its 10 and a half hour battery life is enough for a long day of work or school, and its solid metal chassis is both durable and lightweight enough to survive a rough commute to work or class. The Apple Silicon M3 processor gives the MacBook Air 13 a power boost over last gen’s Air 13 M2, but its graphics power still lags behind comparable laptops like the Dell XPS 16 or Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. If you want to stay in the MacBook family, both the MacBook Pro 14/16 M3 Pro and M3 Max offer better central and graphics performance—albeit at a premium. On the other end, you can save a couple hundred dollars if you opt for the Apple MacBook Air 13 M2, which is almost identical to the Air 13 M3.

The M3-powered MacBook Air takes things on a step again. And while Intel-based Windows ultraportables are improving all the time, they can’t match the performance and battery life on show here. Still, the M2 Air remains the elephant in the room. As it’s now available from £999, it’s a stunning option for the price – is it enough for you?

There are some issues. I would love to see Apple do something about that notch, atop the display. And seriously, can we stop giving an 8GB RAM option for a machine that costs Rs 114,900? It’s time that laptop makers start pairing their machines with at least 16GB of memory even for the base variants, especially when they know the kind of people who are going to buy them. Having said that, the MacBook Air 13-inch variant has been one of the most popular Macs in recent years, and now with the M3 silicon, it’s even better. It gets the job done well, no matter what you ask. The 13-inch M3 MacBook Air truly is a standout choice in Apple’s lineup, offering exceptional value, especially considering Apple’s standards. Thanks to the M3 chip, it delivers noteworthy performance improvements over the M2 without necessarily reinventing the wheel. Moreover, its virtually endless battery life ensures seamless productivity throughout a full workday on a single charge.

Some other minor niggles remain, like the lack of an SD card reader, only two USB-C ports, and throttling during longer more intensive workloads can be quite severe. But these aren’t dealbreakers. Because the two USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 3, you can easily get around the SD card and ports issue with USB-C or Thunderbolt hubs. And if you aren’t doing any rendering, 3D graphics, or playing demanding games, throttling shouldn’t be too big of an issue either. If you do any of the abovementioned things, you really should be shopping for a MacBook Pro instead. So happily, the miserly amount of memory and storage is really the MacBook Air’s only grievous shortcoming. The fact is, these are well-built, highly portable notebooks with great displays, performance, and battery life. Simply put, it delivers everything that most people would ever want and need from a notebook. Just make sure you upgrade its memory and storage.

The biggest advantage of the Apple MacBook Air (13″, M3) is its compact dimensions and low weight. No matter if you are constantly on the go or just using the device normally at home or the office, you’re going to value how light this gadget is. That allows it to fit even in smaller backpacks or suitcases without sensing an extra amount of weight. The build quality is great – the laptop feels as solid as a tank. The keyboard is comfortable for work. The key travel is fine (not the longest we’ve seen though) and the feedback is pleasantly clicky. The touchpad is top-notch – it’s big, super smooth, and accurate. As always, the upgradability here is non-existent. Our laptop has 16GB RAM and a 512GB NVMe. We didn’t experience any slowdowns during the testing.

This may be Apple’s cheapest portable Mac, but it gives up very little to its desktop cousins in terms of performance. The Apple MacBook M3 is another step down the revolutionary road that began with the M1, a journey that sees the Mac move further away from Intel processors and deeper into the new, efficient and quiet computing landscape. The M3 Air’s battery life is exceptional, it’s completely silent in use, thin and light, and with a 15-inch screen it’s big enough for most uses. The M3 Air is a serious laptop for any creative pro, but it is perhaps starting to look like it’s falling behind in the innovation stakes.

There are people like my mother for whom a base 13- or 15-inch MacBook Air M3 would be fine for now. She mostly writes emails and watches movies with her current MacBook, but since the memory can’t be upgraded later, it’s worth spending an extra $200 to extend its usable lifespan by several years. Most high school students and humanities majors can get by with the same, too, but again: anything less than 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage is not ideal, especially in the long term. The MacBook Air is still one of the best laptops you can buy for general-purpose use, and since you can’t completely avoid Apple’s upgrade funnel, spending an extra $100 to get the M3 instead of the M2 is small potatoes compared to how far the upgrade funnel could take you. If you have an M1 Air or earlier and are fine giving up the wedge shape, you’re going to have a great time with the M3 Air, as long as you upgrade the memory. And maybe the storage. Or maybe spend even more to get the Pro instead.

The MacBook Air with the M3 chip is a fantastic laptop. I'd call it boringly good because it gets almost everything right that you would expect from a sleek ultrabook. Plus, it pushes the extra mile at battery longevity, sustained performance, and the reliability of macOS Sonoma. If you know your workflow and the Pro model is a definite overkill for you, even the $1,099 base model (with an external SSD strapped to it) will last you for years. Apple, for some reason, wants to push this laptop's AI capabilities — which seems like a fashionable-buzzword thing, whereas the device currently remains the benchmark ultrabook. But saying that isn't as topical or attractive as focusing on AI — and Apple's already been promising that the MacBook Air's been on top of the pile for years.

Nevertheless, the keyboard is followed by a large touchpad supports various pressure-sensing capabilities and multi-touch gestures, intelligently preventing accidental touches. Powered by the M3 chip with an 8-core CPU, up to a 10-core GPU configuration, and a 16-core neural engine, the MacBook Air delivers smooth performance. Even after prolonged use, performance remains consistent, except for power-and-graphic intensive tasks where the fanless design may lead to performance drops. The battery life is impressive, almost reaching Apple's claimed 18 hours, allowing users to confidently leave the charger behind for extended periods. Priced at Rs 174,900 (review unit), the MacBook Air with M3 offers versatility across various parameters, making it a compelling choice for students, professionals, and consumers seeking a thin-and-light laptop with excellent performance and battery life.

Apple has added to all the confusion around AI PCs by pitching the new M3 MacBook Air as the “World’s Best Consumer Laptop for AI.” Yep, another computer with “AI” sprinkled on top of the messaging. But the truth is, the full picture will be revealed only when the company reveals its Gen AI strategy later this year, as CEO Tim Cook has already indicated. That means this notebook is now more of an AI-ready computer that may not give you exactly the true scale at which Apple sees how generative artificial intelligence will be embedded across its operating system or services. So, should you get the new M3 MacBook Air just on the premise of it being a computer almost ready for the prime-time AI era, or do you want to upgrade to a Mac as a replacement for an old notebook that seems outdated both in tech and performance?

For those who don’t have professional workflows, this is the best MacBook you can currently buy and the one I would personally choose. I’d only recommend the MacBook Pro M3 ($1599/£1699) for those who want a fully capable HDR display. There’s lots of competition on the Windows side, with the £1399.99 Asus Zenbook 14 taking the best laptop crown currently and this does have the OLED display the MacBook Air is missing. It’s not often said that Apple laptops offer good value, but I think the MacBook Air M3 is just that. With a starting price of £1099/$1099 (down from £1249/$1199 for the M2 13-inch model) rising to a very tempting £1299/$1299 for the 15-inch, this machine is truly hard to beat.

If it is in any doubt: I absolutely loved using the MacBook Air 13. It is fast, has extremely long battery life, good screen and audio performance, great hardware and design, including the backlit keyboard and trackpad, and it is light enough to be chuckable in the messiest and fullest of backpacks. Also, the software — in this case macOS Sonoma — compliments the hardware well. At least, in terms of out of the box experience, as well as in terms of user choices and polish, I find it better than Windows. Now, there are some tasks for which the Air M3 may not be the right laptop. And I mentioned them in the beginning of this article.

While competition from Intel and AMD are challenging Apple when it comes to raw performance, the MacBook Air 13 M3 shows Apple still has a clear lead when it comes to the balance between performance and efficiency. This is particularly valuable in a thin-and-light form factor like the 13-inch Air M3, as it manages to offer sufficient performance to handle any productivity task and at least light creative work in an easily portable chassis. Not only that, but you don't need to be on a perpetual search for an outlet oasis, as you have enough battery life to last through a full day for most people. While the 13-inch MacBook Air M3 isn't cheap at a starting price of $1,099 ($1,299 for the model I'd recommend with 16GB of RAM), the reality is that this aligns closely with its Windows counterparts that offer anywhere near the same quality hardware.

All of which brings me back around to the advice I gave at the very top of this review. If you have £1,099 to spend on your main laptop, and if you need something reliable, speedy, long-lasting and compact, there’s nothing better than the M3 MacBook Air. Yes, you can buy Windows laptops that are faster and cheaper and, yes, they will probably have more RAM and storage. However, they will also be louder and less efficient and they will have worse battery life. You could also opt for the M2 MacBook Air – it’s cheaper, after all – but with only a £100 price gap, I think you’d be doing yourself a disservice. The M3 Apple MacBook Air is for me, therefore, the new king of laptops. If you want the best portable computer on the market, save yourself a lot of messing around and just go out and buy one.

Here are the results of the 13-inch M3 MacBook Air. To recap, the unit I’m testing is the most basic one with 8 CPU cores, 8 GPU cores, 8GB of memory, and 256GB SSD. Despite its humble specs, it proved to be really capable performer. Its CPU performance is clearly markedly better than an M2 MacBook Air. On bursty benchmarks like Geekbench 6, it was as much as 20% faster. But on longer workloads where throttling comes into play like Cinebench, that advantage drops to around 8%. Throttling on long workloads can be quite significant. In our video transcode test, the MacBook Air took nearly 50% longer to complete as compared to the 14-inch MacBook Pro, which also has an 8-core CPU M3 chip.

If you’re upgrading from the M2, absolutely not. There’s not nearly enough new here to make it worth an upgrade from the M2 MacBook Air. But if you’re coming from the M1 MacBook Air (or an older MacBook), you’ll be delighted by the M3 MacBook Air. The GPU performance is excellent, and the ability to support two monitors will be a game changer for some, even if it requires keeping the lid closed. If you’re considering this against many of the comparable Windows laptops in this price range, you’ll again find that the M3 MacBook Air outclasses those laptops in almost every way. Put simply, the M3 MacBook Air is still one of the very best laptops you can buy, and it’s a solid value for the price.

People are going to have a hard time calling the MacBook Air underpowered now. Ever since the 12-inch MacBook, I've dreamed about a small and light computer that can do it all, and every year, the Air line gets closer and closer to that perfection. If you just want a phenomenal computer, any MacBook Air with an M-series chip will be sufficient, and if you just do basic office work and light creative stuff on the side, the base model offers more than enough power. Creatives will benefit from the upgrade to the 10-core GPU model and 16GB of RAM, but most people really need to worry about storage. It fills up fast on laptops and if you plan to game, that will eat a lot of your SSD space. If you want to dive deeper into what model is right for you we have a full buying guide here. Overall, you'll struggle to find the power limits of the M3. Even for creative work, it's an amazing computer.

If you're currently using a previous Apple Silicon Mac, upgrading to the M3 MacBook Air might be a hard sell. The performance gains are marginal and may not be substantial enough to warrant an immediate upgrade, especially if your current laptop still serves you well. The M3 MacBook Air retains much of what made its predecessors great, with some incremental improvements in performance and connectivity. However, I think the M3 MacBook Air shines as an entry point into macOS and the Apple ecosystem. For those looking to switch from Windows or upgrade from an older Intel-based MacBook, this laptop offers a compelling package, one that embodies Apple's new design language, insanely long battery life, and general quality-of-life improvements across the board with faster Wi-Fi and storage.

The M3 MacBook Air is more of an incremental upgrade. After some criticism, Apple has equipped its notebook with an anti-fingerprint coating. In addition, the manufacturer finally managed to make its standard silicon chips capable of operating two external screens. The better speakers in the 15-inch model are also a welcome innovation. However, the fact that Apple is more concerned with product maintenance with the M3 Macbook Air also means that upgrading from its previous models is less advisable. The performance of the M3 SoC is once again fantastic and doesn't even have to cower behind the M3 Pro and M3 Max, but differences to the M2 should be rather minor unless running two external screens is of utmost importance to you.

As we said at the outset of this review, the iterative progress of Apple's MacBook Air is predictable but consistently impressive. With the same ultraportable design and a compelling boost in performance and features, the 13-inch MacBook Air is a compelling choice for ultraportable-laptop shoppers. The newest model gains productivity performance, expanded monitor support, and a GPU that can even handle some light gaming, all in a package that's feathery enough to carry home from the office, pack alongside textbooks, or use on a cross-country flight. Yeah, we still dislike the screen notch, and the limitations to the monitor support (different, this time) are still real, but one thing is true above all: If you want a Mac that's exceptionally portable, and capable enough for daily life, the latest 13-inch Apple MacBook Air is our new favorite.

The 15-inch M3 MacBook Air may seem like a simple refresh, but as someone who owns the M2 MacBook Air, I’d definitely trade it in for the new-generation model. Our testing shows that the M3 MacBook Air is about 20% faster, give or take, than the M2 MacBook Air, particularly when it comes to creator-focused workflows. In other words, expect zippier performance, whether you’re a fledgling video editor or a photo-editing hobbyist. The 15-inch M3 MacBook Air continues to blur the line of the Air and Pro models, providing ample “oomph” for creatives, professionals, and students who need robust performance that can handle their multifaceted workflows.

For most, the M2 is a better buy since it leaves you with more budget to upgrade your storage from the base 512GB option. If you want a large screen, the 15-inch M3 is a nice machine, and the extra battery life is always welcome. That leaves the 13-inch M3 Air in a weird spot, but if you want to dabble in video editing, gaming or see yourself getting into AI over the next few years, that M3 chip will likely be helpful to you.

Modell:
Apple MacBook Air 13 M3
