The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is both a solid productivity machine in its own right, with specs tailor-made for work, and a surprisingly balanced laptop that can handle light editing and even native gaming. Its main downfall is that its battery life can't keep up with everything it does.

The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 adheres to Google’s new mantra of double power and double the performance. I could edit photos and videos while pushing out documents and watching hours of content on my favorite streaming site. It never struggled with any of the tasks I put before it, and although the battery life is under 10 hours, which is what I was hoping for, I can’t hold that against it at all. For a laptop that costs under $400, you can basically do whatever your heart desires, from document pushing, video, and photo editing to even some gaming. You can get all that for just $399. Google and its OEM partners just put Apple and Microsoft on notice.

I’ve long thought a Chromebook’s biggest selling point was value for money. That’s still true in this new Chromebook Plus era – except now the hardware has been improved across the board, these laptops are easier to recommend to more than just shoppers wanting a basic computer. The Chromebook Plus 515 is an excellent everyday machine, that can do almost everything an affordable Windows notebook can. Sure, screen brightness could be higher, and there are other Chromebooks with better battery life, but it otherwise won’t let you down. Performance is great, build quality is spot on for the money, and it has ample storage. If you’re on a modest budget, and don’t rely on software that only works with Windows, it’s a brilliant buy. If you think portability and premium materials are worth paying extra for, though, there’s a superior selection over in Microsoft land.

Nothing about the Chromebook Plus 515 readily stands out. Nothing shines in a way that you want to tell others about it. The most remarkable thing might be that you spent R10 999 on it, as it is the official RRP according to Acer representatives in South Africa. For that asking price we recommend you look for alternatives running a different operating system, especially in South Africa where there are so many different options in the market with similar specs. The Chromebook Plus 515 presents reliable performance and steady battery life, but from its looks, its display and its operating system that shackles the user, we were left wanting for something more. It is an aggressively fine PC, and receives a fine score for its trouble.

With Chromebook Plus, one of the things I’ve really enjoyed so far is the fact that these devices deliver a solid, steady experience almost without fail, regardless of their price. Sure, the more expensive ones have some nicer perks, but the core Chromebook experience is pretty great across the board, and I think that’s what Google was after. And nowhere is this reality more true than with one of the least expensive Chromebook Plus models of the pack – the Acer Chromebook Plus 515.

Everyone thinks the typical Google Chromebook is behind the times for batter life, build quality and performance. But the new Chromebook Plus series aims to break those assumptions and in many ways, the Acer 515 becomes all most of you will need from an everyday laptop.

The Chromebook Plus 515 has the same issues as the Chromebook Plus 514, in that the screen brightness isn’t where we’d like it to be, and the battery life is underwhelming. Yet these aren’t such serious problems on the Plus 515, partly because it’s a better fit for mostly desktop use, and because the screen has slightly more punch and contrast. What’s more, the strong all-round performance and excellent ergonomics count for a lot. It would be great to see a big-screen Chromebook Plus unit with a brighter display and more premium materials, but that machine would cost significantly more. When you look at what the Chromebook Plus 515 delivers for the money, it’s excellent value – and one of the strongest options in the new line-up of Chromebook Plus devices.

The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is a superb business-ready Chromebook if you're on a budget, competing with Chromebooks in the class above on performance while providing solid ergonomics and a decent screen. If you need mobility or higher-speed connectivity, then you'll either need to increase your budget or make different compromises elsewhere, but if you spend most of your time in one location and you're looking for a Chrome OS workhorse, they don't get much stronger or more reliable than the Chromebook Plus 515.

Yeah! You should. The only real downside is the aesthetics, which are a real snooze-fest. The Asus Chromebook Plus CX34, with its ivory-colored chassis and backlit keyboard, is more beautiful by comparison (at least to my eyes). That said, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is a reliable performer, which is what really matters at the end of the day. Beauty’s only skin deep, folks. The 13-hour battery life is about average for a Chromebook, but that’s plenty of juice if you’re ever away from an outlet for a while. If you’ve been on the hunt for a solid everyday laptop that offers strong performance, good audio, and a 1080p webcam, then the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is a fine choice.

A Chromebook is an alternative to a Windows PC if all you use it for is emails, scouring the web and suchlike. These days a Chromebook has anti virus built in so you are already saving money and you should be safe to trawl the net, but as always remember if the offer looks to too good to be true it almost certainly is and you will probably get bugs that you do not want.

For the price, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is probably the laptop I’d recommend over almost any other these days – that is, assuming you don’t absolutely need Windows in your day-to-day. The build quality paired with the right processor for the job means this is one machine that should feasibly last many years of consistent use. For education at the very least, it’s almost perfect. ChromeOS will never offer full feature parity with its competitors, and that’s just something we need to live with. But with cloud-based browser and app solutions to popular software becoming more and more common, the gap will continue to close. Based on Acer’s effort, Chromebook Plus looks set to be a success, offering a well-rounded device for under £500. It undercuts swankier Chromebook rivals, like the Lenovo IdeaPad 5i Chromebook, but faces tough competition from other members of Google’s new program, like the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34.

While I have my gripes about the Acer Chromebook Plus 515, it's really not a bad Chromebook at all. I do wish it had a brighter display, and I also wish that the base configuration was a 13th-generation chip with an NVMe instead of using last year's 12th-gen SoC with UFS storage. But at $399, this is currently the cheapest model out of the latest crop of Chromebooks, and it does exactly what you would expect. So, as long as you set the right expectations, you won't be disappointed. It will be interesting to see if Acer actually does end up releasing the higher-end configurations to the public or if those will be locked behind enterprise doors where they'll never see the light of day. That being said, the Chromebook Plus 515 has grown on me to the point that if someone asks me what Chromebook to get, this will probably be my first recommendation. Again, it's all about setting the expectations, and the Chromebook Plus 515 nails a lot of the basics. All the while coming in at less than $400.

Can we just forget about $199 Chromebooks now? Yes, they had dim, dinky, fuzzy screens and barely enough memory and storage—even for ChromeOS's modest needs—and sufficed only for school kids, but they're so seven years ago. Google's new Chromebook Plus campaign brings cutting-edge software features to laptops with five times better hardware starting at only twice the price—$399.99, which is the MSRP of the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 seen here. The Plus 515 isn't a powerful workstation or gaming rig (though it comes with a three-month GeForce Now Priority subscription), but it throws down a hell of a gauntlet to low-cost Windows notebooks.

Even with older chips driving the ChromeOS experience, this first round of Chromebook Plus devices is bringing so much more potential to an audience who may have been missing out on it for years - those who couldn't afford better. These notebooks meet or exceed the minimum requirements for intensive tasks such as triple-A gaming and video editing. The app ecosystem is looking better than ever and, if momentum continues to build, there's no reason we can't see more of Adobe's Creative Suite or complete optimization of Steam and other game distros move into ChromeOS. The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 seems to take advantage of these myriad of synergies in software and hardware development whether we're fully aware of them or not - you could say that the 515 is one of many boats being floated by a rising tide.

For $399, the Acer Chromebook Plus 515 has a lot to offer. The average person uses their laptop to browse the web, stream videos or music, and run the occasional app. You can do all of that with ease on the Chromebook Plus 515. Although, if you plan to stream videos or music through your laptop, use Bluetooth headphones because the laptop's built-in speaker setup isn't the best. Typing on the Plus 515 is comfortable, there are plenty of built-in keys that make navigating ChromeOS even easier than it already is, and the 1080p webcam will have you looking sharp on your Zoom meetings. The battery life is pretty great too, with a 7-10 hour average range depending on how demanding your tasks are and your preferred brightness setting. Of course, a budget-friendly laptop has to cut costs somewhere. In this case, the laptop's build got the short end of the stick. It feels durable, but the hinge is a bit creaky and you can tell the laptop's materials are of a cheaper quality than other pricier laptops.
