Die AMD Radeon R9 M280X ist eine DirectX-12-Grafikkarte der oberen Mittelklasse für Notebooks. Sie wird in 28 Nanometern gefertigt und basiert auf der GCN-Architektur (Graphics Core Next) von AMD. Der zugrundeliegende Saturn-Chip – im Desktop-Segment unter dem Codenamen Bonaire auf der Radeon R7 M260(X) zu finden – taktet mit 900 bis 1.000 MHz (Boost) und verfügt über 896 Shadereinheiten, 56 TMUs sowie 16 ROPs. Über ein 128 Bit breites Interface können bis zu 4 GB GDDR5-Speicher (1.375 MHz bzw. 5.500 MHz effektiv, 88 GB/s) angebunden werden.

Die Leistung der Radeon R9 M280X ordnet sich in etwa zwischen den Nvidia-Modellen GeForce GTX 765M und GeForce GTX 850M bzw. GTX 950M ein. Aktuelle Spiele des Jahres 2014/2015 werden in der Regel in mittleren bis hohen Einstellungen und FullHD-Auflösung flüssig wiedergegeben; sehr anspruchsvolle Titel wie Assassin's Creed Unity können allerdings etwas nierigere Settings erfordern.

Der Grafikchip unterstützt das automatische Umschalten zur Prozessorgrafik namens Enduro (ähnlich Nvidias Optimus) sowie einige weitere Stromspartechniken wie ZeroCore (vollständige Deaktivierung bei abgeschaltetem Display, nur ohne Enduro wirksam). Eine offizielle TDP-Angabe ist bislang nicht bekannt; schätzungsweise dürfte der Maximalverbrauch bei etwa 70 bis 80 Watt liegen, sodass die GPU nur in großen Notebooks ab 15 Zoll Bilddiagonale eingesetzt werden kann.

Die AMD Radeon R9 M295X ist eine mobile Grafikkarte, die als Aufpreisoption im 5K iMac Late 2014 angeboten wurde. Sie nutzt den Tonga-Chip im Vollausbau mit 2048 Shader (32 Compute Units CU), der auf der dritten Generation der GCN-Architektur (Graphics Core Next) basiert. Der Stromverbrauch dürfte zwischen 100 und 125 Watt liegen.

Unsere Spielebenchmarks im iMac positionieren die Grafikkarte etwa auf dem Niveau einer GeForce GTX 880M bzw. 970M (siehe unten). Für anspruchsvolle Spiele in 5K reicht die Leistung jedoch auf keine Fälle aus.

Die AMD Radeon R9 M265X ist eine im Frühjahr 2014 vorgestellte DirectX 12 fähige Notebook-Grafikkarte der gehobenen Mittelklasse. Sie basiert auf der GCN (Graphics Core Next)-Architektur und wird im 28- Nanometer-Prozess gefertigt. Die zugrundeliegende „Cape Verde“-GPU verfügt über 640 Unified Shader, eine Kerntaktrate von 625 Mhz (u.U. zzgl. Boost) sowie eine 128 Bit breite Speicheranbindung mit 2 oder 4 GB GDDR5 Grafikspeicher mit einem Speichertakt von 1.000 Mhz (4.000 MHz effektiv). Dadurch ist die M265X knapp vergleichbar mit der älteren Radeon HD 8850M. Im Vergleich zur ähnlich benannten R7 M265, besitzt die R9 M265X deutlich mehr Shader (640 vs 384) jedoch bei geringeren Taktraten (625 vs. 825 - 980 MHz).

Architektur

Der Grafikprozessor mit dem Codenamen „Cape Verde“ basiert auf der „Graphics Core Next (GCN)“ Architektur und wird im 28-Nanometer-Verfahren hergestellt. Die GCN-Architektur verfügt über 10 Rechen-Einheiten, die die 640 Stream-Prozessoren enthalten. Darüber hinaus kann die AMD Radeon R9 M265X auf 40 Textureinheiten, 64 Z-/ROP-Schablonen-Einheiten, 16 Farb-ROP-einheiten sowie auf einen 512 KB großen L2 Lese-/ Schreibcache zurückgreifen.

Die AMD Radeon R9 M265X ist mit dem neusten PCIe-Standard 3.0 kompatibel.

Leistung

Die AMD Radeon M265X positioniert sich abhängig von Taktrate (je nach Ausnutzung der Boost-Technologie) im Mittelfeld mobiler Grafikkarten zum Stand Mitte 2014. Im Hinblick auf die Konkurrenz reiht sich die GPU knapp über der GeForce 840M und der GeForce 940M des Konkurrenten Nvidia ein. Damit ermöglicht die Mittelklasse GPU die flüssige Darstellung von aktuellen PC-Spielen (Stand Mitte 2014) in mittleren bis hohen Einstellungen und Auflösungen von 1.366 x 768 bis 1.600 x 900 Pixeln. Lediglich sehr aufwändige Titel wie Crysis 3, Far Cry 3 o.ä. erfordern eine deutliche Absenkung von Detailgrad und/oder Auflösung.

Features

Das Featureset der AMD Radeon R9 M265X umfasst u.a. die sog. „Eyefinity“ Technologie, die je nach Schnittstellen Gegebenheiten die Nutzung von bis zu 6 Bildschirmen simultan ermöglicht.

Aus Effizienzgründen kann die Mittelklasse GPU zusätzlich mit der „Enduro“ Technologie aufwarten, die quasi das Pendant zu Nvidias „Optimus“ darstellt und im Idle-Betrieb oder bei Niedriglastaufgaben (Office, Internet etc.) die GPU zugunsten der CPU-Grafikeinheit deaktiviert, um Strom zu sparen.

Für Spieler stellt AMD in der M265X seine Grafikschnittstelle „Mantle“ zur Verfügung. Diese vom Unternehmen selbst entwickelte Programmierschnittstelle für Grafikausgaben stellt ein Alternativmodell zu Direct3D oder OpenGL dar und soll in zukünftigen Spielen und Anwendungen zunehmend unterstützt werden. Unter anderen unterstützen bereits Titel, wie Battlefield 4, Thief oder Die Sims 4 die Mantle- Schnittstelle.

Mit „App Acceleration“ stattet AMD die Radeon R9 M265X zudem mit einem Technologiepaket zur Verbesserung der Videoqualität und Steigerung der Anwendungsleistung aus. Um alle beschriebenen Funktionen zu nutzen, ist jedoch eine Unterstützung für OpenCL, DirectCompute oder DirectX Videobeschleunigung (DXVA) erforderlich.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der AMD Radeon R9 M265X liegt mit in etwa 35 bis 40 Watt zwischen den Konkurrenzmodellen 840M (ca. 30 Watt) und GTX 850M (~40-45 Watt). Damit eignet sich die Grafikkarte am besten für Notebooks ab etwa 15 Zoll. Bei geringer Last helfen zusätzliche Taktstufen der GPU dabei, Energie einzusparen; im Leerlauf kann die Karte mittels der Enduro-Technologie zugunsten der Prozessor- Grafik auch vollständig deaktiviert werden.
