Die AMD Radeon R9 M280X ist eine DirectX-12-Grafikkarte der oberen Mittelklasse für Notebooks. Sie wird in 28 Nanometern gefertigt und basiert auf der GCN-Architektur (Graphics Core Next) von AMD. Der zugrundeliegende Saturn-Chip – im Desktop-Segment unter dem Codenamen Bonaire auf der Radeon R7 M260(X) zu finden – taktet mit 900 bis 1.000 MHz (Boost) und verfügt über 896 Shadereinheiten, 56 TMUs sowie 16 ROPs. Über ein 128 Bit breites Interface können bis zu 4 GB GDDR5-Speicher (1.375 MHz bzw. 5.500 MHz effektiv, 88 GB/s) angebunden werden.

Die Leistung der Radeon R9 M280X ordnet sich in etwa zwischen den Nvidia-Modellen GeForce GTX 765M und GeForce GTX 850M bzw. GTX 950M ein. Aktuelle Spiele des Jahres 2014/2015 werden in der Regel in mittleren bis hohen Einstellungen und FullHD-Auflösung flüssig wiedergegeben; sehr anspruchsvolle Titel wie Assassin's Creed Unity können allerdings etwas nierigere Settings erfordern.

Der Grafikchip unterstützt das automatische Umschalten zur Prozessorgrafik namens Enduro (ähnlich Nvidias Optimus) sowie einige weitere Stromspartechniken wie ZeroCore (vollständige Deaktivierung bei abgeschaltetem Display, nur ohne Enduro wirksam). Eine offizielle TDP-Angabe ist bislang nicht bekannt; schätzungsweise dürfte der Maximalverbrauch bei etwa 70 bis 80 Watt liegen, sodass die GPU nur in großen Notebooks ab 15 Zoll Bilddiagonale eingesetzt werden kann.

Die AMD Radeon R9 M275 ist eine DirectX-12-Grafikkarte für Notebooks der Performance-Klasse. Sie wird in 28nm gefertigt und basiert auf der GCN (Graphics Core Next) Architektur von AMD. Die Grafikkarte ähnelt der Radeon HD 8870M, allerdings taktet der Kern mit bis zu 925 MHz deutlich höher. Der Speichertakt liegt mit maximal 1.125 MHz (GDDR5, 4.500 MHz effektiv) auf einem Niveau mit dem Vorgängermodell. Oftmals wird von den Notebookherstellern jedoch nur eine Speichertaktrate von 1.000 MHz (4.000 MHz effektiv) gewählt.

Die Radeon R9 M275 basiert wie die 8800M Serie auf dem Desktop Cape Verde Chip der Radeon HD 7770 und bietet somit 640 1D Shader, 16 ROPs und 40 Textureinheiten.

Die Leistung liegt aufgrund des höheren Kerntaktes leicht oberhalb der alten Radeon HD 8870M, kommt jedoch nicht ganz an Nvidias GeForce GTX 760M heran. Sehr anspruchsvolle Spiele wie Battlefield 4 oder Assassin's Creed IV sind dadurch mit maximalen Einstellungen nicht mehr flüssig spielbar. Hohe Details und 1.366 x 768 Pixel werden hier aber dennoch bewältigt. In etwas älteren oder weniger fordernden Spielen wie Dota 2 sind auch sehr hohe Settings und FullHD-Auflösung möglich.

Die R9-Serie unterstützt das automatische Umschalten zur Prozessorgrafik, welches von AMD Enduro genannt wird. Dank Eyefinity können bis zu 6 Monitore an den Grafikchip angeschlossen werden. In Verbindung mit Enduro ist jedoch die Prozessorgrafik der limitierende Faktor (da an dieser die Displays angschlossen sind). Die Rechenleistung des Kerns kann auch per OpenCL 1.2 für generelle Berechnungen genutzt werden. 

Die R9-Serie bietet neben Enduro auch einige zusätzliche Stromspartechniken. AMD hat zum Beispiel Power Gating im Chip implementiert, um Bereiche des Grafikchips abzuschalten, die nicht benötigt werden. Weiters ermöglicht ZeroCore einen deutlich verringerten Stromverbrauch bei inaktivem Display (natürlich nur ohne Enduro wirksam). Zu guter Letzt gibt es noch die PowerTune Funktion, mit der AMD den Chip automatisch über- und untertakten kann, um innerhalb der TDP Grenzen zu bleiben. Laut AMD wird der Chip bei extremen Lasten (z.B. synthetische Auslastungs-Tools) untertaktet und bei Spielen übertaktet um die TDP ideal auszuschöpfen.

Die GPU besitzt auch weiterhin einen integrierten HD Audio Prozessor, der  Discrete Digital Multipoint Audio (DDMA) unterstützt und so Audio an mehrere Ausgabegeräte gleichzeitig geschickt werden kann.

Die höher getaktete Desktop 7770 hat laut AMD einen typischen Stromverbrauch von etwa 80 Watt, weshalb die R9 M275 bei rund 60 Watt liegen sollte. Damit eignet sie sich nur für relativ große und schwere Notebooks.

Die AMD Radeon R9 M295X ist eine mobile Grafikkarte, die als Aufpreisoption im 5K iMac Late 2014 angeboten wurde. Sie nutzt den Tonga-Chip im Vollausbau mit 2048 Shader (32 Compute Units CU), der auf der dritten Generation der GCN-Architektur (Graphics Core Next) basiert. Der Stromverbrauch dürfte zwischen 100 und 125 Watt liegen.

Unsere Spielebenchmarks im iMac positionieren die Grafikkarte etwa auf dem Niveau einer GeForce GTX 880M bzw. 970M (siehe unten). Für anspruchsvolle Spiele in 5K reicht die Leistung jedoch auf keine Fälle aus.
