Die NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M ist eine DirectX-12-Grafikkarte für Notebooks der High-End-Klasse, die im März 2014 vorgestellt wurde. Genau wie die noch schnellere GeForce GTX 880M basiert die 870M auf dem GK104-Chip (28 nm) der Kepler-Architektur, bei dem hier allerdings nur 1.344 der 1.536 Shadereinheiten aktiviert sind. Die Taktraten liegen bei 941 MHz (zzgl. Boost) für den Chip und 1.250 MHz (5.000 MHz effektiv) für den GDDR5-RAM (bis zu 6 GB, 192 Bit Interface).

Architektur

Der GK104 verfügt als Kepler-Chip über 8 Shader-Blöcke mit je 192 CUDA Cores, die vom Hersteller mit dem Kürzel SMX bezeichnet werden. Bei der 870M sind davon 7 aktiviert. Zwei SMX bilden zusammen mit zwei Polymorph Engines und einer gemeinsamen Raster Engine einen sogenannten GPC (Graphics Processing Cluster).

Insgesamt verfügt die GTX 870M so über 1.344 Shader-Einheiten, 112 TMUs und 24 ROPs an einem 192-Bit-Speicherinterface. Die Anbindung erfolgt über PCIe 3.0.

Leistung

Im Vergleich mit der älteren GeForce GTX 770M macht die GTX 870M einen deutlichen Sprung nach oben, da sowohl Rechenleistung als auch Bandbreite drastisch gesteigert wurden. Dadurch liegt die Performance sogar noch oberhalb der GTX 680M und reicht an die GTX 680MX sowie die AMD Radeon R9 M290X heran. Auch extrem anspruchsvolle Spiele wie Thief, Battlefield 4 oder Assassin´s Creed IV können in sehr hohen Details und FullHD-Auflösung flüssig dargestellt werden.

Features

Das Featureset entspricht den Keplerkarten der GeForce-GTX-700M-Serie. Bis zu 4 aktive Displays (mit Optimus u.U. weniger) sind mit der GTX 870M möglich, die mit einer maximalen Auflösung von 3840 x 2160 Pixeln zum Beispiel über DisplayPort 1.2 oder HDMI 1.4a angebunden werden können. HD-Audio-Formate wie Dolby True HD und DTS-HD lassen sich als Bitstream an einen geeigneten Receiver senden. Wie in der Vergangenheit kann jedoch auch weiterhin 3D Vision nicht mit Optimus-Unterstützung kombiniert werden.

Der PureVideo HD Videoprozessor der fünften Generation (VP5) kann die Formate MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 und VC1/WMV9 bis zu einer Auflösung von 4k decodieren und somit den Prozessor entlasten. Auch zwei parallele Streams, beispielsweise für Picture-in-Picture bei einer Blu-Ray, sind möglich. Eine weitere Besonderheit ist die Integration eines dedizierten Videoencoders ähnlich Intels Quick Sync, der über die NVENC-API angesprochen werden kann.

Weitere neue Features der GTX-800M-Serie, die jedoch auch von älteren Karten unterstützt werden, sind Battery Boost (längere Akkulaufzeit beim Spielen), Shadowplay (Aufzeichnung von Spiele-Videos) und Gamestream (Spiele-Streaming auf Shield-Konsole). Weitere Informationen dazu unter diesem Link.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Leistungsaufnahme der GeForce GTX 870M sollte inkl. MXM Board und Speicher etwa im Bereich der alten GTX 780M und damit bei mindestens 100 Watt liegen. Die hohe Abwärme erlaubt den Einsatz nur in großen und schweren Notebooks. Bei geringer Last helfen zusätzliche Taktstufen dabei, Energie einzusparen, im Leerlauf kann die GPU mit Hilfe der Optimus-Technologie zugunsten der Prozessorgrafik auch vollständig deaktiviert werden.

Die Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 6 GB Laptop GPU (oder Mobile, NVIDIA_DEV.2583, GN20-P0-R 6GB, 3050 Refresh) ist der Refresh der RTX 3050 mit 4GB und bietet neben dem größeren Grafikspeicher auch mehr Shader (2.560 Kerne = +25% wie die RTX 3050 Ti). Dafür wurde der Speicherbus von 128 Bit auf 96 Bit reduziert.

Wie üblich wird es verschiedene Varianten mit einem TGP von 35 - 50 (ehemals Max-Q) und 60 - 80 Watt geben. Diese takten von 713 - 1530 (Basistakt) bis 1058 - 1740 (Boost) und bieten dementsprechend eine unterschiedliche Performance.

Die durchschnittliche Leistung sollte etwas oberhalb der alten RTX 3050 (4GB) Laptop GPU liegen und knapp hinter der RTX 3050 Ti.

Der GA107 Chip bietet 3.072 FP32 ALUs wovon die Hälfte auch INT32 Befehle ausführen können (also 1.536 INT32 ALUs). Bei Turing konnten noch alle Shader FP32 oder INT32 ausführen. Die Raytracing und Tensor Kerne auf dem Chip wurden laut Nvidia ebenfalls verbessert. Weiters integriert der Ampere Chip einen Hardware Video-Encoder (NVENC 5. Generation für H.264 und H.265) und Decoder (7. Generation für zahlreiche Formate inklusive AV1).

Der GA107 Chip wird bei Samsung im 8nm (8N) Verfahren welches mit dem 7nm Verfahren von TSMC nicht ganz mithalten kann (z.B. von AMD genutzt, aber auch für den professionellen GA100 Ampere Chip).
