Bei der NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 handelt es sich um eine DirectX-11.1-fähige High-End-Grafikkarte für Desktop-PCs. Sie basiert auf dem GK104-Chip der Kepler-Architektur (Strukturbreite: 28 nm) und enthält 1536 Shadereinheiten, auch CUDA-Cores genannt. Der Kerntakt wird unter Last nach Möglichkeit von 1006 auf maximal 1058 MHz erhöht. Der Speichertakt des 2048 MByte großen und mit 256 bit angebundenen GDDR5-VRAMs beträgt 1.500 MHz (I/O-Takt 3.000 MHz, Effektivtakt 6.000 MHz; Durchsatz: 192.2 GB/s).

Architektur

Kepler ist der Nachfolger der beliebten Fermi-Architektur, welche unter anderem  bei der GeForce-500-Reihe zum Einsatz kam. Der zugrunde liegende GK104-Chip verfügt über 8 SMX-Blöcke mit je 192 CUDA-Cores. Zwei SMX bilden zusammen mit zwei Polymorph-Engines und einer gemeinsamen Raster-Engine einen sogenannten GPC (Graphics Processing Cluster). Da die Shader keine eigene Takt-Domain mehr besitzen (Hot Clock), entspricht die Rechenleistung in etwa der Hälfte der Einheiten der Fermi-Architektur mit doppelter Taktrate. Diese Änderung ist einer der Gründe dafür, dass sich laut Nvidia die Energieeffizienz gegenüber dem Vorgänger verdoppelt hat. Auch die Tessellation-Leistung soll noch einmal verbessert worden sein.

Als weitere Neuerungen werden PCIe 3.0, der Turbo-Modus GPU Boost und die Kantenglättungsverfahren FXAA und TXAA unterstützt. Adaptive V-Sync soll bei hohen Frameraten nerviges Tearing verhindern. 

Leistung

Trotz der Namensverwandtschaft liegt die Performance deutlich über der mobilen GTX 680M. Jedes moderne Spiel (Stand 2013) wird auch in hohen Auflösungen und maximalen Details ruckelfrei dargestellt. Die Grafikpower reicht sogar für die stereoskopische 3D-Wiedergabe (3D Vision) und/oder mehrere Monitore.

Features

Das aktualisierte Featureset umfasst nun die Unterstützung von bis zu 4 aktiven Displays, die beispielsweise per DisplayPort 1.2 oder HDMI 1.4a mit Bildmaterial versorgt werden. HD-Audio-Formate wie Dolby True HD und DTS-HD lassen sich als Bitstream an einen geeigneten Receiver übertragen.

Der HD-Videoprozessor der fünften Generation (VP5) wurde vom GF119-Chip übernommen. Dieser kann die Formate MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 und VC1/WMV9 bis zu einer Auflösung von 4k decodieren und somit den Prozessor entlasten. Auch zwei parallele Streams, zum Beispiel für Picture-in-Picture bei Blu-Rays, sind möglich. Eine weitere Neuerung ist die Integration eines dedizierten Videoencoders ähnlich Intels Quick Sync, der über die NVENC-API angesprochen werden kann.

Die Leistungsaufnahme gibt Nvidia mit 195 Watt an. Für die normale Variante benötigt man zwei 6-pin-Stromstecker.

Intel UHD Graphics 600

Die Intel UHD Graphics 600 ist eine Prozessorgrafikkarte der Ende 2017 vorgestellten Gemini-Lake-Generation (z.B. Celeron N4100). Zwar glänzt die GPU mit einer sehr niedrigen Leistungsaufnahme, allerdings siedelt sich die Performance nur im untersten Low-End-Segment an und ist für neuere Spiele zumeist nicht ausreichend. Als teildeaktivierte Variante der Gemini-Lake-GPU verfügt die UHD Graphics 600 nur über 12 Execution Units (UHD Graphics 605: 18 EUs), die je nach Modell mit bis zu 650 bis 750 MHz takten. Technisch basiert die GPU auf der Intel-Gen9-Architektur, die auch bei der teureren Skylake-Serie und der alten HD Graphics 500 zum Einsatz kommt. Im Vergleich zur HD Graphics 500 haben sich daher nur die möglichen die Displayanschlüsse geändert (Gen 10 nun mit wahrscheinlich HDMI 2.0 nativ).

Mangels eigenem Grafikspeicher oder eDRAM-Cache greift die UHD Graphics 600 über das Interface des Prozessors auf den System-RAM zu (2x 64 Bit DDR3L / LPDDR4-2400).

Performance

Die Performance der UHD Graphics 600 sollte bei gleicher Taktrate auf dem selben Niveau wie bei der HD Graphics 500 sein. Dadurch positioniert sich die UHD Graphics 600 nur im absoluten Einstiegsbereich und kann nur wenige aktuelle Spiele flüssig darstellen. Die HD Graphics 500 im Spin 1 schaffte z.b. nur Sims 4, Dirt 3 und World of Warcraft. Selbst Counter-Strike: Go war im EZbook 3 z.B. nicht flüssig spielbar.

Features

Der überarbeitete Videodecoder decodiert und encodiert H.265-/HEVC-Videos (8b und 10b) sowie VP9 vollständig in Hardware und arbeitet dadurch deutlich effizienter als bislang. Bei der Bildausgabe unterstützt der SoC dank Gen.10 nun auch HDMI 2.0a mit HDCP 2.2 un DisplayPort 1.2a nativ.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die TDP des gesamten SoCs liegt bei standardmäßig bei 6 Watt, sodass die GPU vor allem in (oftmals passiv gekühlten) Netbooks oder schlanken Notebooks zu finden ist. Optional kann die TDP auch auf 4,8 Watt abgesenkt werden, wodurch allerdings die Performance sinkt.

Intel Iris Graphics 550

Die Intel Iris Graphics 550 (GT3e) ist eine Prozessorgrafikkarte der im Sommer 2015 vorgestellten Skylake-Generation. Als Nachfolger der Iris Graphics 6100 (Broadwell) ist die Iris Graphics 550 dabei in den Modellen der 28-Watt-Klasse zu finden und besitzt erstmals einen dedizierten eDRAM-Cache mit 64 MB Kapazität. Die sogenannte GT3e-Ausbaustufe der Skylake-GPU verfügt weiterhin über 48 Execution Units (EUs), die je nach Modell mit bis zu 1.100 MHz takten. Neben dem eDRAM-Cache kann die Iris 550 auch über das Interface des Prozessors auf den Hauptspeicher zugreifen (2x 64 Bit DDR3L-1600/DDR4-2133).

Von der Iris Graphics 540 der gewöhnlichen 15-Watt-Modelle unterscheidet sich die Iris 550 lediglich durch ihren etwas höheren Maximaltakt sowie die annähernd verdoppelte TDP, die eine bessere Ausnutzung des Turbo-Boost-Spielraumes erlaubt.

Performance

Die exakte Leistung der Iris Graphics 550 hängt vom jeweiligen CPU-Modell ab, da sich die Maximaltaktrate sowie die Größe des L3-Caches leicht unterscheiden können. Zum anderen beeinflusst auch der verwendete Speicher (DDR3/DDR4) die Performance.

Die höchste Leistung erreichen hochtaktende Core-i7-Ableger wie der Core i7-6567U. Je nach Spiel ordnet sich die Iris 550 vermutlich im Bereich einer dedizierten GeForce 930M ein und kann aktuelle Titel (Stand 2015) in niedrigen bis mittleren Einstellungen flüssig darstellen.

Features

Die überarbeitete Videoeinheit decodiert nun auch H.265-/HEVC-Videos vollständig in Hardware und arbeitet dadurch deutlich effizienter als bislang. Die Bildausgabe erfolgt über DP 1.2/eDP 1.3 (max. 3.840 x 2.160 @ 60 Hz), wohingegen HDMI nur in der älteren Version 1.4a angeboten wird. Ein HDMI-2.0-Anschluss kann aber mittels Konverter von DisplayPort ergänzt werden. Maximal lassen sich drei Displays parallel angesteuern.

Leistungsaufnahme

Die Iris Graphics 550 ist in den Prozessoren der 28-Watt-Klasse zu finden und damit für mittelgroße Note- und Ultrabooks geeignet.
