Die Nvidia GeForce GT 240M ist eine DirectX 10.1 fähige Grafikkarte aus 2009 für Mittelklasse Notebooks und technisch eine höher-getaktete GeForce GT 230M . Durch die 48 Shader und den 128 Bit Speicherbus reiht sich die Karte zwischen 130M und GeForce 9700M GTS ein. Der Stromverbrauch bleibt dank 40nm Prozess jedoch auf Niveau der GeForce GT 130M . Die später erschienende GT330M basiert auf dem selben Kern und bietet lediglich minimal höhere Taktraten.
Der GT216 Kern basiert laut Nvidia auf die High-End Desktop Architektur (GTX 200) und hat daher auch einige Verbesserungen gegenüber der Vorgängergeneration. Weiters wurde die Micro-Architektur verbessert um Akkulaufzeit und Performance zu steigern.
Die GeForce GT240M unterstützt die Videodekodierung im Grafikchip (PureVideo HD mit VP4) für weniger CPU Belastung bei HD Dekodierung und Hybrid SLI (HybridPower und GeForceBoost) hinzugefügt (nur in Verbindung mit einem aktuellen Nvidia Chipsatz). Der verbaute Video Processor 4 (VP4) unterstützt das vollständige Dekodieren von H.264, VC-1, MPEG-2, und jetzt auch MPEG-4 ASP (DivX oder xVID). Nur MPEG-1 wird nicht unterstützt (jedoch ist der Decodieraufwand hier minimal).
HybridPower ermöglicht (wenn im Notebook verbaut) das Umschalten zwischen onboard Grafik (im Nvidia Chipsatz) und dedizierter Grafikkarte (GT 240M) in Windows Vista. Dadurch kann die dedizierte Grafikkarte abgeschaltet werden, wenn sie nicht benötigt wird (Office, Surfen) und dadurch Energie gespart werden. Hybrid Power kann im Vista Betrieb umgeschaltet werden (derzeit noch manuell per Tool, später lt. Nvidia automatisch im Treiber). GeforceBoost wird von der GeForce GT 240M nicht unterstützt (es wäre kein Geschwindigkeitsgewinn möglich).
Wie auch bei der alten 9700M GTS übernehmen 48 so genannte Stream Prozessoren die anstehende Grafikarbeit (die früher die Pixel und Vertex Shader übernommen haben). Der Vorteil ist, daß es theortisch keinen Leerlauf der ALUs mehr gibt. Die Streamprozessoren sind bei NVIDIA 1-dimensional (1D) und können pro Takt eine Skalaroperation mit einer MADD- (Addition und Multiplikation) und MUL-Anweisung (Multiplikation) durführen. Ausserdem taktet NVIDIA die Shader-ALUs höher als den restlichen Chip (1210 versus 550 MHz).
Dank CUDA , DirectX Compute , OpenCL und PhysX Support können die Stream Prozessoren auch für andere Anwendungen (Video Kodierung, Physikeffekte, ...) eingesetzt werden und sind bei solchen Spezialanwendungen deutlich schneller als gängige Hauptprozessoren (durch die hohe Anzahl an Shadern die parallel arbeiten).
Moderne und anspruchsvolle DirectX 10 Spiele (wie Crysis) laufen auf der GT 230M wahrscheinlich mit mittleren Details bei mittleren Auflösungen flüssig. Weniger anspruchsvolle Spiele sollten in hohen Details flüssig laufen.
Bei Verwendung des langsamer getakteten GDDR2 Speichers ist die Grafikleistung etwa 20% niedriger als bei GDDR3 (jedoch sinkt auch der Stromverbrauch um etwa 2 Watt). Eventuell kann auch DDR2 Desktopspeicher mit noch größeren Performanceeinbußen eingesetzt werden.
Der maximale Stromverbrauch bleibt wie bei der GeForce GT 130M und der stärkeren GT 240M bei 23 Watt (TDP) laut Nvidia. Nvidia gibt jedoch an (dank der überarbeiteten Architektur und des 40nm Prozesses) den Stromverbrauch ohne Last (Idle) um 50% reduzieren zu können.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU ► remove from comparison
Die Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU oder 3080 Mobile (für Laptops, GN20-E7, Max-P) ist Anfang 2021 die schnellste Grafikkarte für Notebooks. Sie basiert auf den GA104-775-A1 Ampere Chip und bietet 8 oder 16 GB GDDR6 Grafikspeicher mit einem 256 Bit Grafikbus (mit 12 oder 14 Gbps). Sie unterstützt PCIe 4.0 und ist in verschiedenen Varianten von 80 - 150+ Watt (TGP) verfügbar sein (80, 90, 115, 125, 135, 145 und 150+ Watt). Als Package nutzt die Notebook-Grafikkarte GB5-256 und die Chipgröße soll 40x40mm betragen. Die GPU unterstützt eDP 1.4b zum Anschluss des internen Monitors.
Es gibt nun keine Max-Q Variante mehr (die 80 - 90 Watt Versionen heissen auch nur "Laptop GPU"), aber jede TGP-Version kann die Max-Q Technologien nutzen (Dynamic Boost, Whispermode).
Die Leistung ist abhängig von der TGP-Variante und der verwendeten Kühlung. Bei gleichem TGP sollte sie aber deutlich oberhalb einer alten RTX 2080 Super Mobile liegen aber noch deutlich unterhalb der Desktop RTX 3080 . Dadurch reicht die Leistung bei den meisten anspruchsvollen Spielen auch für 4k mit maximalen Details. Bei 1080p sind auch Frameraten über 100 fps möglich.
Der GA104 Chip bietet 6144 FP32 ALUs wovon die Hälfte auch INT32 Befehle ausführen können (also 3072 INT32 ALUs). Bei Turing konnten noch alle Shader FP32 oder INT32 ausführen. Die Raytracing und Tensor Kerne auf dem Chip wurden laut Nvidia ebenfalls verbessert.
Der GA104 Chip wird bei Samsung im 8nm (8N) Verfahren welches mit dem 7nm Verfahren von TSMC nicht ganz mithalten kann (z.B. von AMD genutzt, aber auch für den professionellen GA100 Ampere Chip).

Die Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is zum Launch Anfang 2022 die schnellste GeForce Grafikkarte der Ampere-Generation. Sie nutzt den großen GA102-Chip mit 10.752 Shader und 24 GB GDDR6X Grafikspeicher.
Mit einer Leistungsaufnahme von 450 Watt braucht die GPU zwar sehr viel Strom unter Last, die Energieeffizienz ist jedoch trotzdem sehr gut (Leistung pro Watt).
